Should groups that are tax exempt be barred from participation in politics, campaigns, et el? here are some groups, churches that have come under fire for the very reason.

Years ago, CBN, owned by Televangelsit Pat Robertson, lost its status and they fianally recovered thier status as a tax exempt organization.

Should they be barred from doing what they have the right to do as Americans?

No. There are no constitutional grounds to do this, or any other reason for that matter except liberals believe that Freedom of Speech only applies to them.

Yes, they paid no taxes, individuals that wish to speak up is fine with me but only tax payers should have a say in government. This goes for both sides of the question. It doesn't matter if it is a church or a public tax exempt entity.

Most are. The point of the tax-exempt purpose is that the group is serving a non-political beneficial function: education, charity, etc.

They get the benefits of tax-exempt status because they are providing benefits independent of the political structure, but benefits that would otherwise be provide by the govt (schools, social programs, etc.) If the group becomes entangled in govt or political activity, it is no longer independent, and should not longer get the benefits of such.

The opposite perspective is that all groups should be treated equally, equally taxed or equally exempt, regardless of what they do.

Hell yes they should be barred. If they want tax exempt status it's the price they pay. Otherwise, let them politic all they want, but know that they will then pay tax just like everyone else. Get a grip.

Freedom and freedom of speech applies to all Americans. Even if they belong to a church, they are still Americans. That would be like barring the communist party from voting. An American is an American is an American, and as long as they are eligible and legal to vote and be heard. I don't care what group they belong to.
