I can hardly do one length without getting knackered half way across. Should I just keep trying? If I was fitter and had more strength would I be ok? I've joined a gym with access to the pool in my membership, so I want to start using it!

Keep at it. Don't aim at more than a few yards further each time, and enjoy the rest of your swimming. You will be encouraged as you discover that you are making progress, however little. When I was in my 70's I started swimming regularly and could just about make one width of the pool. Bit by bit I got up to 1000 metres, though it took an hour! Then I was content, because it got so boring going up and down.

By the way, I'm a Christian, and I used the time for praying (and meditating, which is much the same thing).

It's not a matter of strength or any of those things. I can easily do a width of the 4 lane pool by kicking off from the edge BUT I need to keep flat in the water and not expect to breathe!
Almost certainly you are using too much energy trying to keep too much of your body out of the water and therefore kicking down rather than forwards. That's what uses the energy.
Try kicking off from the edge of the pool either on your front or back and just effectively floating.
That works well. Then move on from there.

Just keep swimming. Ask and see if your gym has someone teaches lessons. As you get more fit from the other activities at the gym swimming will start getting easier. Technique is one of the main keys to swimming. As you get stronger and your technique gets better you will find that swimming is about the best cardiovascular exercise there is. Then it becomes a wonderful cycle. You will enjoy swimming because it is making you more fit, and you will be more fit because your enjoying swimming. Find an instructor and never look back.

If you feel out of breath, try jogging to build up your stamina. I jog 2 times a week in additional to swimming 5 days a week.
However if your muscles get too tired quickly, either your technique is wrong (get a coach to teach you the right technique), or you should go to a gym and do some weight training (I do that 2 times a week).
Try to go slowly at first, focusing on your strokes, then gradually swim faster.

I can bet it's not a question of strength or stamina. It's more a question of proper technique and practice. You are getting tired because you are not swimming efficiently. You need to consciously improve your stroke. In the process you will automatically improve your ability to swim more distance. Also there is one more aspect you should consider :"fear" . Most people are scared of water and that is one reason they end up wasting too much energy staying afloat. Improvement of swimming technique , reduction in fear , improvement in stamina go all hand-in-hand. To sumarize :the most important thing is "technique"! . It takes time to improve but rest assured ,it's really worth the trouble. Keep going ! All the best !

If you've ever been disillusioned into thinking that there's nothing you can do to prevent premature ejaculation and that it's just something "you're born with" or "can't do anything about" then hopefully this will change your mind and inspire you https://tr.im/044WU

Because the truth is that there are many ways to prevent premature ejaculation, and being able to last longer in bed is something that lies within your control.

Yeah, practise more and do some strength and cardio work in the gym. It is also definately worth having a few lessons to help with your stroke efficiency to help your swimming. Good luck! And don't give up.
