How come if you work you get no help for clothes for you kids or free school meals, if you don't work you get money to buy the uniform and they get free meals, is this not all wrong? Whos to say just because you work you have more money than someone who sits on the *** all day?

If your refering to the UK?then thats standard here!all those who are honest and hard working get hit hard from the pocket, however if your an asylum seeker, never worked a day in your life, are a single female under 18 with fifty kids from unknown fathers,or a career criminal who cannot get a job, then hey simply apply to the uk dhss and they will give you all the cash you need,a house, health care and heaps of other benefits.
the government dont care about hard workers is this country.

My heart goes out to you, working mom. Welfare often rewards the lazy, at the expense of the ones who do work and pay taxes. Still, know that you are doing the right thing by trying your best and not exploiting the system.
I don't know about other countries, but in the US, there is a program for those who make below a certain income where you can get school meals at a lower rate. Good luck.

You pinpoint an excellent weakness in the welfare system in the US. What we are lacking is something like a "helping hand" approach rather than the all or nothing approach which we have now. This makes it very difficult for those who needed a great deal of help at one time and wish to get back on their feet.
It is unfortunate that things of this nature are divided along political lines too, so they have practically no chance of being fixed. The system, as it is, rewards the person who remains on welfare and penalizes the ones who wish to work their way up and out of it. Hence what we have today is a country with generations of welfare recipients who have little or no way of escaping the handout situation and, worst of all, the handout mentality. We all suffer as a result.

I have worked all my life, I have struggled, gone without, but now retired I still have to pay for everything. If I or my wife die and the other one has to go into a home, our bungalow and all our belongings have to be sold to p[ay for our care(free in Scotland) If I had spent a life scrounging and not working it would all be free! If the above happens our daughter gets nothing. My wife should have started by being a single mother, its all free!!! Then just carried on scrounging, I suppose you soon learn the ropes. We could start sorting these people out by charging single mothers with getting pregnant by neglect, there are lots of free contraceptives, they all know how to get the freebies, they must know how to get these. But why should they a bastard leads a girl to a life free of all cares.

I think if you earn below a certain limit, you should get free school meals etc, check with your school to find out. Find out what else you may be entitled to, if you don't ask you don't get. Do you get any financial support from your children's dad, he should pay something, maybe you could ask for a bit more to go towards their uniform etc.
I agree it's tough, my hat goes off to single mums who work and raise children on their own, I've got friends doing this and it's so hard.

You've got a problem with the unemployed by the sounds of it.
Personaly i think people on low incomes shouldnt have to pay tax and should have discounts on councill tax. Your myth that the unemployed enjoy having no prospects to better their lifes is a bit twisted, how can you expect single mothers with kids to look after to go out and work for pennuts and miraculously find someone trust worthy to look after there kids when they will have less money to buy food with after lossing their vital benefits. Get down off that high horse of yours!

Have you actually applied for any of these benefits? Not all of them are only available to people not working!! Not all people on benefits are there by choice, most are either ill or have sick children which stops them from being able to work!! I know this from personal experience, I had a disabled child and my other son had very bad asthma that meant I had to go and collect either of them from school at a moments notice on many occasions!! Don't tar everyone with the same brush, you have no idea of their circumstances. Also don't be jealous of people that probably have a very hard time making ends meet!!

theoretically, if you work, you are expected to afford all the things you need, this doesn't take into consideration the high rate of income tax you pay, astronomical expense of school uniforms, being blackmailed into buying all the designer stuff for your kids at Christmas. Now, if you don't work, you don't pay tax, school uniforms, school meals, you can get subsidised travel, and you can actually afford all those expensive Christmas goodies, because you don't even have to pay your rent, or poll tax, boy, that sounds interesting!

Totally agree. In UK you get sod all if you work. Last year I had to give up work due to ill health. the system would have forced me to sell my house then put me into crap accomodation at twice the price rather that help me with my mortgage for a few months. Luckily I'm in a great job again but am loathe to pay into a pension because then i'll get **** all from the state when i am older yet lazy bastards who contribute nothing all their lives get a pension, second pension, rent, council tax and health paid for them.

There are a lot of "urban legends" on this subject. A lot of exaggerated and false stories concerning benefits for those applying for refugee status. Also, people who work but are under a certain income can apply for certain benefits. Yes, a lot of people do fall through the cracks, but I believe your claims as well as many of those in the answers, are exaggerated.
