There are products on the market that you can put down in the spring and they will last all year. I work at a school and we put it down on our playgrounds and athletic fields. Works for one year...guaranteed.....and it does!!!!! Cost about $20 a bag. Well worth the money. We have many children that are also allergic to the bites. It "does" work.

Yuck! Ordinary ants are bad enough: I'm not sure I want to deal with fire ants!
I don't know if this will work for you, but I have seen recipes for insecticides and repellants made largely of garlic juice, a few drops of dish detergent- and I think water and vinegar. Since the ants are on your grass, you might want to hold the vinegar.
Good luck!

I dont know about repelling them, but, killing them is a different matter.
Go to the hardware store and get some Diazanon Plus. (This stuff kills just about anything and everything under the sun, including fire ants).
Its a concentrate that makes up to 60 gallons. Just mix up a few gallons and pour into the ant holes, flooding them and it will kill all the ants.
(I use this on termites and it works wonders).
I wish you well..

Usually, I am pretty anti chemical, but in the case of fire ants, I make an exception and go straight for the powerful stuff. Ortho FireAnt killer. It is granuals you pour on the mounds, they take it down inside the nest and it wipes them out pretty quickly. I used to live in FL and TX and there are tons of fire ants there. Have tried many things, but the ortho never fails.

I lived in TX for many years, and my exterminator taught me a 'trick". It does NOT repel them, but it DOES kill them! He told me to take a handfull of INSTANT oatmeal and sprinkle it on the mound. The ants eat it, and feed it to the queen. When it rains (or stomach acids, I forget which) it will kill them (due to the selling of the instant oatmeal). Once the queen is dead, the rest leave. I know it sounds strange, but it did work! Good luck-those buggers are nasty!

here in Alabama we have fire ants also, I mix 1/3 cup dishwashing liquid detergent with 1 gal of water and pour on mound, it either kills them or they move to another yard
but so far for the past 5 years its worked for me
(the soap I use is Palmolive Antibacterial for dishes)

Boric acid. You can buy this at any drug store. All you will need to do is sprinkle the powder all over where you do not want to be.
