Yes you can. I trim mine with hedge clippers to keep them under control. I have a hill covered because I can't mow there but it tends to want to spread to other areas. I've tried a weed-whacker too but you tear them instead of a good clean cut I get with the hedge clippers. So trim away!

They are getting to the end of their life cycle. Yank 'em and re plant
fall / winter stuff. You'll be happier.
