I'm not allowed to paint or do anything permanent.

Any specific suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated! I like a bright, sunny, warm, friendly, positive atmosphere.

If you've ever done something similar, what did you do?

do a google search for:
shabby chic
small home decorating
frugal decorating

I also live in a small home. I recently started redecorating my living room in a hunter green color theme with an outdoor feel. It's a bit eclectic as I've got things that are country/cabin-ish like a lamp that looks like a boat and old stoneware bowls for candles plus some native american pottery here and there. I've been slowly shopping for things like curtains, throw pillows, small blankets/afghans, and knick knacks at rummage sales and 2nd hand stores. You can find TONS of things for almost nothing if you're patient enough to look. Plus...there's a thrill of the hunt when you're able to find something really neat that will go with your theme.

Join your local freecycle to find some more goodies.

DIY and Home and Garden television have a bunch of ideas for situations like yours. You can grow plants in pots, use mirrors and hang pictures, or use area rugs. On DIY (I think it was that, anyway), I once saw a project where the people built a bar on coasters that they could roll around, and take out when they were ready to move. And just a couple of months ago I bought and built a book shelf for displaying a few of my candles and bric-a-brac that were otherwise crowded together in too little space.

And yes, yard sales and second hand stores are good. And while my husband and I were on our honeymoon, we found a little dollar store that had some lovely things in it- including a beautiful urn that we ended up buying and taking home.

Happy decorating!

No paint and nothing permanent really limits you. Perhaps he would furnish the paint if you did the painting. If not be sure it is very clean and neat. Inexpensive curtains or paintings. Greenery, even artificial gives the feeling of openness. Lighter colors make a place look larger. Get rid of or out of view everything you can for a fresh look. New throw rugs, etc. perhaps a rearranging of furniture or a few new inexpensive pieces. Lawn ornaments from a garage sale will help.Good Luck

Go to every garage sale with in 20 miles!
You can get all kinds of nic naks and doo dads that will "spruce up" the inside and outside for little money. (providing your a thrify shopper and can haggle). My wife loves garage sales, and everyone always comes and stays at our house, (all the relatives), because they tell us that they "feel" more comfortable here :)

If you have a sparsely decorated house, thats only for show. A home with things on the walls, especially the kitchen, will be warm and inviting to everyone.

I wish you well..

The Dollar store has great accessories for fixing a place up really nice. Try the 99 cent store too. Check them both out. Buy some pictures, and plates to hang on the wall, and get some table decorations. Area rugs and candles are great too.

experiment with colours by using different coloured embellished cushions,
small rugs, flowers..
u can turn colourful bedspreads into curtains or they can also be used to treat the walls,
add little planters in every room be it on a shelf,a wall or floor, play with the lighting that can change the look altogether, use corner/table lamps
