Best advice is to check with your son's doctor on this. But I have a mild case of asthma and the cold, dampness and of course days with high pollen are the worst for me.
But asthma properly treated should not prevent him for participating in sports and make sure his has his inhaler with him at all times.

Ive ived in northern california where the air is thick and from what i remember with the kids that had asthma it was much worse in a colder higher climate than in the desert where i live now. Alot of older people that lived back east working in coal mines and simular jobs retired to the desert because the air was so much easier to breathe prolonging their life span. The dude that had asthma on our football team was one of our best running backs and we were state champs two years in a row. But from watching him and if he forgot his inhaler wich work great depending on the degree of it the attack was bad, like ambulance bad.

I know a lad who was described as a "professional asthmatic". It was about 18 months working with a new science that he ran the London Marathon, with a very respectable time (which makes me puke!).

No self-proclaiming cure or any such rubbish, just pure science at its very best.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you want some information.

I would say mild weather, not too cold and not too hot. Extremes of any kind would aggravate it.
