As a layman I can say that they both have equal equation value, meaning both are having same result. No difference. However, I may be wrong as this has been asked in the "Maths" segment. But I all along believed that 4 square cm and 4cm squared are same.

square means to the power two.

4^2 cm =16 cm This is a length

(4cm)^2=16 * (cm to the power two.) This is an area

square: The product obtained when a number or quantity is multiplied by itself: 49 is the square of 7.

squared: To raise (a number or quantity) to the second power.

"4 cm squared" is an unfortunate frazing since there's a difference between
4 (cm squared) and
(4 cm) squared

Therefore you get conflicting answers.

4 square centimers is clear, as is
"a 4cm by 4cm square"

The latter is 16 square cm, or 16 cm^2.

cm^2 must be pronounced "square centimeters".
