Its legal here but do you feel its too big a caliber to be ethical hunting?

yes a .243 is a huge round smaller is better with a 22 cal you can hit something at least 1000 yards I've hunted squirrel with a high powered pump b b rifle with a scope you have to hit them in the eye it works try it

To me it's not a matter of ethics, but practicality and cost of ammo. I'd use a .22

What is wrong with using a 22 cal. ?
With a 22, there will still be something left to find besides hamburger.
