YES!!!!!
they helped you out when you needed it and it would be the right thing to do. This will help you down the road when you need them again and trust me you will need them again. Your parents are grown and if they got money for car repair they would have to pay it back. You should do the same.

It should be clearly defined as a gift or a loan. If no terms were given I would say the person should consider it a loan and attempt to repay that loan. If the other party refuses the payment then it is ok to consider it a gift. I think just because money comes from your parents doesn't mean that you should feel you are not obligated to repay them! also if you take advantage of it once, it may not happen again when you need the help again in the future! Repay them asap!

Was this money given with an implication taht it should be paid back at his earliest convenience? It sounds like there was a given understanding of such, even if "loan" of "gift" were never mentioned. A 20 yr old may not be mature enough to understand but you could mention to him as such. You have nothing to lose in this situation, but hopefully youve learned a lesson for next time. Good luck

Sounds like the parent and grown child need to talk about it. Usually if a parent gives a child money and the child isn't specifically told that it's a loan that needs to be repaid, it's considered a gift.

Yes! as you say this was not a loan or given as a gift. This is a unspoken loan, Parents do not want to see their children go without, but they do not either want them to move back home. This is your chance to experience what your parents have had to go through, your time to see how you deal and cope with the worlds problems that comes your way.

If it was never said he had to pay it back it probably wont be returned unless hes like me i always pay any money given to me if im in need of it and dont have it at the given time.
I guess it all depends on how independant he is and if he feels that he should be giveing the money back that he was given.
I guess if you think he should pay back any money thats given to him you should tell him its a loan next time.

No, I think it is petty. The kid will eventually have his own kids and hopefully be as generous with them as his parents were with him. It's nice to help out children, especially during that transition time from child to adult. Also, maybe he'll make it up to his parents when they are in a nursing home... I just think that it's good karma to make the gesture without expecting anything in return, because in the end, it will gain all sorts of returns that were unexpected.

If it bothers you so much why not talk to him about it?
He is older than 18, got a job, so you dont owe him anything.
Just find a way to make it polite. And be sure that it is ur RIGHT, because if you will feel confused or so he might feel it and use the situation.
Better be honest than have some hidden unspoken things that bother you and will later cause you to be annoyed by your son.

If you can afford to , you should pay them back , or buy them something they need. If not now then in the future. As time goes on , you'll see that family's always take care of each other, and it's hard to say who owes who what.
At least that's the way it should be.

Hey,
Well i think you should wait fr him to return it back. if some time has passed say about a month or so and he/she has not even talked about it then you should politely remind him/her to pay the money back. Or alternatively if he or she still do not then you can ask take him out with you and ask him to pay for the expenditure.
See if this works it has worked for me ... try and let me know
Regards
