Jess.. Hello! and how are you today (smiling).
I hope that you can focus on people that are nice. It's easy to hate people because of their rude behavior. Trust me, I have said "hello" and smiled at MANY people on the campus and they either stare at me negatively or scowl at me or ignore me too.
People that do that are miserable and hateful. Feel sorry for them that they have to judge you instantly. You need to stay away from people like that because they have some kind of problem and they take it out on you.
Please remember there are good nice people out there.
I hope you have a very nice day today and I would say hello to you if you said hi to me in public :)

I see where you're coming from - but try to remember that there are all kinds of people in the world. I'm a people watcher - I love to just quietly observe the behaviors of people as I go about my day.
It's easy to focus on rude people, because we can see so many examples of it every day. But, there are also people who are thankful for every day - and show it. We just need to remember our interactions with them too. They certainly brighten MY day.
Rude people used to bother me - until I realized how completely miserable they must be to go about their days treating people like they do. Still, rude people do a great job of reminding me of how I DON'T want to be as a person - and of how I don't want to treat others.
On any given day, in any given situation with a 'chance' meeting with a stranger, you never know what that person is going through. The person may not show it, but our smile/greeting/courtesy may be the only bright spot of that person's day! My feeling is that my being friendly and polite toward others doesn't depend on the response of the other person - be it positive or negative. I do it because it makes me feel better about myself.
Yes - there are rude people in life. But, there are also people who are friendly, warm, polite and respectful toward others. Try not to let the negatives you see overshadow the positives.

I guess it depends where you live. Not all people are rude . And generally large cities produce the most rude people, especially in the North. Must be the cold weather , and crowds.
If you live on an island the people are very nice and polite. Those are just two extreme examples. So No ,I have to disagree with you, Most people are very nice.

I guess it's just another sign of the times. "Smile and the whole world smiles with you", is no longer true. Like you, It's instilled in me to Smile and be pleasant , say my "Please and Thank yous."
If it doesn't make another person feel good or brighten up their day, that's their problem (their full of anger and stress anyway), at least it made me feel good about my day. Don't worry about it so much, and don't become someone Else's victim!
Smiling at ya....You have a Great Day!

Because the world has been reduced to its primal inhibitive nature. You can't stop it, nobody can. But by you trying to be polite, you prove there are good people in the world.

the world is a hard place to live. people are rude for no reason, or at least it seems that way. in my opinion there is no excuse for being rude though...
