I say yes. Have you heard of a Kurd with a bomb strapped to himself? These folks are civilized and deserve not to be joined at the hip with the Sunnis and Shiites. Of course Turkey may object to the idea of Kurdish independence because they have a large Kurdish population that may move towards consolidation with the new Kurdish state. What say you?

Although Turkey would be the biggest concern, if a Kurdish state were formed, it is in everyone best interest that they sign off on the idea, first. Without Turkey's stamp of approval, all that would be accomplished is an expansion of war, only this time to the north, between the Kurds and Turkey.

The Kurds truly do deserve to be free of the fanatical Sunni and Shites tribes of Islam. They are treated as 2nd class citizens to begin with, so their lot would certainly improve w/o Iraq and it's ilk to contend with, however they need first, to make peace with Turkey.

I agree in principle. However, there's plenty of Machiavellian "power" politics on this issue, I'm sure. I can tell you that many Iraqis (Shia, Sunni, and Assyrian) have some weird deeply seated scorn for Kurds, and Kurds are the brunt of many of their jokes.
I also believe that if the Kurds get their own state, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq (who use a great deal of military equipment purchased from USA) would be immediately involved in open warfare against the Kurd nation and there would continue to be grave human rights atrocities. I don't know what the best answer is, but from everything I read, those three nations in particular just have it out for Kurds.

In earlier days there was a Kurdish State, which was divided into pieces and distributed to Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria, etc.,

Now if Iraq is divided and a separate Kurd State is formed, ultimately Iran, Turkey and Syria will also be divided, in this way Muslim countries are divided and divided get weak.

It is the policy of Europeans and Americans to divide and rule.
Europe and U.S., are creators of wars, peace breakers of the world. History reveals the same. Go ahead.

(Big Sigh)

It's a bit more complex than whether or not the Kurds deserve to have their own country or not; and yes, I personally believe the do deserve independance and should govern themselves. However, there are political and religious implication that go back centuries in that area of the world. Based on our current track record, I say why not leave it up to the newly elected Iraqi government to re-draw their own borders. When the U.S. and/or the U.N. starts "redrawing" borders somewhere (i.e., Israel when it was formed from Palestine in 1949) someone doesn't like the result and the car bombers and fundamentalist fanatics start coming out of the woodwork.

I think if Iraq wants to survive they need to get their head out of the religious BS and focus on their country. There is no reason they all can't live under one state. They will be much stronger for it. I agree with you in that the Kurds have been very quiet in all this mess and perhaps splintering off into their own state may just be the answer. Or annex it with Turkey, that will give them more strength yet.

Uh, the Kurdish Workers Party is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the European Union. Any appeasement to Turkish rebel independence would be counter to Pres. Bush's whole stance on fighting terrorism and would ruin whatever credibility he has left.

Considering Iraq was created by ouside forces in the first place, we should redraw the maps to fit the geo-political structure currently there - ie Basra, its own country. The Iraq shiites and sunnis, their own countries.

We have only to look how Yugoslavia split up following the fall of the Iron Curtain to see how things are evovling (or de-evovling) in Iraq.

It's a fine idea, when the borders of the middle east were drawn it was suggested at that time that Iraq be drawn as three separate countries, those in power thought that idea to be unnecessary, I guess now we see where that led us. The only good thing Saddam did while in power was to keep these groups away from each others throats.

We should put a 51 on them. We can't take back that we attacked and invaded and subjugated another country. We're responsible for their wellfare now, we may as well give them a State Bird and Flower and teach them how to play Baseball. I think once they get a little less propaganda and a little more Rock and Roll they'll find something better to do with their life than bomb delivery.
