You have to get the spelling exactly right. NaCl with capital N and C and lower a and l. Normally spelling is only very important, but in chemistry it is TOTALLY important.

Na is the symbol for the element Sodium. Cl is the symbol for the element Chlorine. When they are chemically combined they form the compound NaCl Sodium Chloride, known as salt or table salt.

Compounds often are formed when the atoms exchange electrons. So, in this case, the sodium will give up an electron to the chlorine. This will cause both of the atoms to be unbalanced electrically, the sodium will have a plus or positive charge and the chlorine will have a minus or negative charge. Atoms that have a + or - charge are called ions.

One of the interesting things about a chemical change is that when the atoms combine you get a complete change in the characteristics of the material. So, sodium by itself is an explosive grey metal, while chlorine is a green gas that is extremely poisonous and corrosive. But once they are combined, bingo, you have salt.

So, there you go!

The element Na is sodium
The element Cl is chlorine
The compound NaCl is sodium chloride, which is also known as table salt.
By the way, DON'T capitalize all of the letters in the element symbols, because then it's WRONG.

Well, it is not usually written with all capitals...
