What do they have to measure you? I am nervous!

Yes, they do. But don't be nervous. If you go to a nice shop like Victoria's Secret they ladies there are very professional and they will not make you feel funny at all. They do it all day long and it is absolutely no big deal to them. The atmosphere in their is geared toward ladies and it smells good and the music is calming...They measure you once and then they bring you a bunch of different bras to try on...you never even have to leave the trying on room. Bring a girlfriend or mom to help you pick what is best for you. Have a little fun with it! It is fun to be a girl!

It depends on whether you go to a specialty shop like Top Drawer Lingerie ( highly recommended) or department store ( I think J.C.Penney's has these, at least sometimes) that has trained bra fitters. Few of these even seem to exist anymore. These well-trained women can often just look at you and tell what size is right.

If you are really nervous then here is a possibility:
I recommend that with your mother's or an older female relatives help, you look on one of the lingerie sites for bra measuring instructions.
Here are a few: www.onehanesplace.com, fig leaves.com, and barenecessities.com.

Here is a good measuring guide:

The most accurate measurement is achieved by having another person help you. This helps make sure that the measuring tape is in the right place and is held level and straight, which is often nearly impossible for us to do all by ourselves.

A good glossary of terms related to bras:

Once you find your size and an idea of what style bra you want then most of the better sites allows you to search by size, then style or types of bra.

I strongly recommend that you avoid places like Victoria's secret for several reasons. 1. They distort women's image toward the sex object, and I would never suggest this for a young girl, and likely not for an older young woman either.
2. While concentrating on making an "object" of the customer they neglect the quality of the product. Much better design and quality can be found for the price elsewhere. Better value for the money is elsewhere.
3. Objectification is not a recommended product for the mental health of young women.

Young women need encouragement toward being the Subject of thier own lives, not objects in someone else's life.

If you want a proper fitting bra they will measure you. But don't worry it is usually an old lady with no modesty, and you will be with a mom or a friend. She will measure around your chest, under your chest, and over. Then she will bring back a bunch of bras for you to try.

It is actually suggested that women get measured more often, so that they keep up to date with their proper size. Or poorly fitting bra is like VPL...just looks bad.

well I think you should measure yourself before you go bra shopping (you measure right under your breast not on it) and tell the lady helping you and she will know what number you will be. And knowing it's your first bra you are probably an "A" cup so no they don't have to measure you

yep, the just measure around your breast at the point where they stick out the most...they do it with clothes on and then they help you find a bra...Victoria Secret was the place i went to that was the most accurate...but don't be nervous and its good to get resized every year or so, depending on if you gain or lose weight but your body also grows as well depending how old you are...

not at all, if the shop assistant is qualified enough, she'll have an approximate idea of your size, otherwise hold the bra on your breasts to see if it's way to big, small or fine. You don't need to get undressed, before trying it on.
