Dance music although it originated in Detriot and Chicago, has never been as big in the states as it has in Europe, therefore they don't feel the need to sub divide it into small genres like we do in Britain and the rest of Europe. There are people in america who know the difference between House and Techno in America but they are fewer. Drum & Bass began in England but they still have it there in small quanties, whilst Trance is very much a European phenomenon.

I'm American and if I want to say that all kinds of dance music is "techno" then that's because it's much more easier and funner to say than the other stuff. Also (to me) it just sounds cooler.

uhm sorry you are not over here to see the websites where we download music from where we have all sorts of different categories for all different types of music, maybe it's not so much just americans which you say which is stereotyping by the way which I absolutely hate but more so people that just aren't into that kind of music and so therefor stereotype the music by putting it in to one category

Basically the music is named for where it is made, how it is made, why it is made, and what it is meant for.
