First you need to make sure your radiator cap is in good condition, if the seal is worn it will make it overheat, second you need to make sure your fan is working right at the time the temperature reaches the middle of your gauge (most cases). One way of checking to see if the water pump is bad is by filling the car with water and turn the car on with the radiator cap not on the radiator.MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT HOT WHEN U DO THIS, leave the car running untill it reaches the proper operatin temperature you will se the water moving in the radiator. Another way the water pump goes bad is by leaking the fluid from the breather hole of the pump and usually that happens when the car is actually parked and not even hot, hope this helps Good Luck!

Just find the leak. Is it in the radiator? is it on the water pump? is the T-stat in right? Is the radiator cap still there? Are you missing a hose? Find the leak, that will tell you where the problem lies.

Possibly.
If your water pump seal is bad. It will leak hot or cold while just sitting there.

I'm guessing you have a blown head gasket that is pressurizing the cooling system and forcing the coolant into the overflow tank, and causing it to overheat.

Refill it, start it and watch for bubbles in the overflow tank.

If it bubbles, you have a blown head gasket.

check your radiator, gaskets, and the water pump. i had this probelm about 2 years ago with a 1982 chevy caprice and it was the gaskets...then in like 2 months it started again, but it was the water pump.

hope this helps and good luck

More than likely it's the water pump.
