why not just sedate them and saw off their tusks?

i think its horrible. the rest of the world has a right to enjoy all animal life... not just the species that can survive human attack.

We live in a world which is filled with wonderful animals ;

we use them for food , and skins and beasts of burdens ,
Some kill for the sake of killing (sport)
we all have a responsibility. to stop unnecessary cruelty and wanton slaughter;
The Killing (poaching ) of elephant tusks, / rhinoceros horns
and the many animals caught, only for trophy hunting !
Seems appalling to me , and so very wrong .
Are, the great amounts of money, paid for these products ,
THIS is why the poorer people, in backward countries do this .

The real obscenity, is that there is a demand for those products .

I am so, against this sort of "hunting .

imports of Ivory, is now illegal in this country .

The necessary culling of weak or injured animals is humane, but should only, ever be carried out by those, skilled to do that job ,

The fact that ivory hunting, still goes on is sickening to me .
And this news item saddened me too

:((

I am totally against it, BUT there is a problem ! In the Krugger Park some herds became so large that the destruction caused by the elephants is so big that nature cannot recover fast enough, and there is only 2 options :
1) capture elephants and send them to other parks, where the same problem will occur with time - and not all parks can accomodate them, remember they are living TANKS !)
2) Culling - select and kill some of them - to reduce their numbers to a more reasonable level - Remember they are enclosed in a given area and breed freely - no natural enemies - and they live up to 70-80 years.

I think it is a complete waste of elephant meat, think of all the starving children in Japan, Man cannot live on whale alone.

The meat should be smoked or processed into some form of sausages for the american market, this way you could help sell the ivory, wouldn't you want to wear a necklace of an animal you have eaten? We could push the souvenir angle, and offer a token portion of the income to some african country that doesn't even have elephants.

Hmmm you have given me a good idea for a business oportunity, thank you.

I AM EXTREMELY TOUCHED TO THE CORE OF MY HEART TO HEAR FROM YOU THAT 100 ELEPHANTS ARE SLAUGHTERED FOR THEIR TUSKS. VERY MERCILESS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE IT THEIR PROFESSION TO SELL ELEPHANT TUSKS, AND THEREFORE DEMAND AND MAKE A PROFESSION OF SOME PEOPLE WHO KILL ELEPHANTS FOR THEIR TUSKS WHICH FETCH THEM A LOT OF MONEY. THIS DEMAND IS CREATED BY PEOPLE WHO WANT IVORY FOR VARIOUS DECORATIVE STUFFS AND ORNAMENTS. THE TUSK LOOK GOOD ON THE ELEPHANTS AND NOT WHEN IT IS WRENCHED OUT BY GREEDY PEOPLE AND THE ELEPHANT IS LEFT TO DIE BLEEDING OR HE CANNOT ANYMORE HELP HIMSELF TO FOOD. AND DIES CURSING HIMSELF THAT HE IS BORN AN ELEPHANT IN A COUNTRY WHERE AN ELEPHANT GOD IS WORSHIPPED WITH POMP.
SUCH PEOPLE SHOULD BE HANGED TILL DEATH. IF OUR FOREST DEPARTMENT IS GENUINE THIS CAN BE PREVENTED, BUT IN A COUNTRY OF NEGLIGENT OFFICERS SUCH TYPE OF ACTIVITIES IS PREVALENT.
WITH THE DEATH OF SO MANY ELEPHANTS, THEIR CLAN WILL DECREASE SOONER THAN POSSIBLE.

They are endangered animals. Soon we might only be able to see them in zoos. Obviously, people killing for ivory are desperate people who are not concerned with long term global extinctions of species. Either they just need to feed their families or they're greedy.
The ones that are most diabolical here are the people who buy ivory products. They are the ones fueling the killings.

I think that's mean to the elephants. I think people should only kill animals if they're going to use the whole body for different things, not just to get one thing off of it, like the Native Americans did.

only a hundred? I am sure a lot more than that have been slaughtered for their tusks. what do I think of it? it seems kind of sad, why can't they just wait for them to die and take the tusks off of one that has just recently died, I hope all who have done this get abducted and put unconscious only to wake missing all of their teeth and have their hands amputated

It's sick.. but its been happening for decades, !!!
I wish it would stop, animals are like humans, they do feel pain and emotions , what sickens me most is that the people that do these disgusting things usually cut the tusks off and leave them to die.. thats just sick
What is this world coming too

What do they do with the bodies afterward is what I want to know. Killing the elephant just for their tusks is cruel.
