Mecca is where heaven and earth meet, the mosque is aligned so that the upper most peak is alligned with the point where heaven meets the earth. The star and moon represent the heavens.

The crescent moon is an Islamic symbol. The rising moon also indicates progress. The star is a symbol of knowledge or enlightenment.
