I saw this on a tv programme a while ago. iIs it true? Does anyone know when women started being called women and how it came about?

I am sure this is not ture, but the story I heard that it all happened in Newcastle and a man saw a woman do something he didn;t like and said 'Wo Man, what are you doing?'

In English at least (it's useless to talk about the words for woman and man in other languages) woman comes from a combination of wíf, which meant female or wife with mon, which meant man or human being, so it either means wife of man or perhaps female human being.

We're still called 'man' now! All humans are 'MANkind'. Everyone, male or female is 'son of man' because man in this context does not mean 'male'.

I'm from Newcastle and your story is complete rubbish.
