No they dont really jump, someone pushes them off the building. The jumping bit is just an illusion!

I have been wondering that all my life. Gee, we wore jumpers in the fifties! So you can tell I am the oldest fossil around these here parts!

It's short for wooly jumper which is a nickname for sheep as they have wool and they jump.
Work it out from there.

According to the OED, it probably comes from the dialect word 'jump' meaning "short coat", which itself is likely to have come from the arabic: jubba.

It comes from the Quechua language...chompa ...meaning loose outer jacket...and of course we probably didnt know how to say chompa..so there you go jumper..was born..
