MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. - the checks printed with MICR are machine readable - bank name, branch name and the cheque number. it helps the clearing house for easy processing and proper accounting.
for eg. the number that reads 600011028 means. chennai , andhrabank and the branch (keelkattalai in this case)

The MICR Number is on the bottom of all checks. It includes the 9 digit routing number for the bank, your personal account number and the check number. After the check is paid the amount also gets encoded on the bottom right hand corner.
