MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. - the checks printed with MICR are machine readable - bank name, branch name and the cheque number. it helps the clearing house for easy processing and proper accounting.
for eg. the number that reads 600011028 means. chennai , andhrabank and the branch (keelkattalai in this case)

The MICR Number is on the bottom of all checks. It includes the 9 digit routing number for the bank, your personal account number and the check number. After the check is paid the amount also gets encoded on the bottom right hand corner.

The MICR number is so the check can be read and processed electronically by the Federal Reserve computers. The fed receives millions of checks a day that get processed by computer.
