Some say that the world is totally corrupt and not capable of being fixed, so there is no point in occupying oneself with social justice endeavors. For instance, there are people who think it is a waste of time to try and alleviate the suffering of people in the Sudan or in certain developing countries. Nothing we do will lastingly help, these folks say. Are they correct? What ya think?

Ultimately, the world is hopeless, thats true. But individual situations are not, so why not try to help?

You have brought out a good question. The world is not beyond repair. If it was so, would we be what we are today after all the wars and natural calamities that the world had witnessed and continue to witness?

Where there is a will, there is a way! Corruption can be fixed if a government has the will to do it! In some places, the governments have succeeded doing so to a great extent.

As for giving a helping hand to those in need, the better- off parts of the world have an obligation to do their best to help the needy without attaching any strings or expecting a return. This kind of help should focus on making the recipients learn how to stand on their own legs instead of spoon-feeding them with their daily needs!

Why do we have a state of disorder, chaos or confusion, or otherwise called entropy, in some parts of the world, as The Great Inquisitor seems to suggest in her answer? We can basically attribute it to poverty which in turn is the cause of inadequate or improper exploitation of the available resources within a country, and in that direction, other well-off countries have an economic obligation to emancipate them so that in due course it could be beneficial to all! Many African countries are in that state requiring focused attention from aid agencies around the world, apart from countries which can afford to help them. What is being done by China in Africa in this regard for example is commendable, though it is accused of hegemony!

Production is for destruction! The world will continue to progress and produce goods and services to meet the ever-increasing needs of the people, and this is destined to climb to a higher level with the imminent full-scale globalization already in progress. At the same time, there is bound to be destruction caused by conflicts and natural calamities, as we have witnessed in the Middle East and USA, but these do create more opportunities for further production to meet the human needs!

So, the world is not beyond repair and the wheels of progress will continue for ever, though there may be a shift in development focus as we witness today - this being a century of Asia in that respect, especially China and India which are destined to overtake Europe and USA!

Absolutely true...there can be no lasting benefit to good or positive efforts. The real benefit of helping others is in bettering yourself. As a person who heals and helps instead of hurting others you purify your own heart and create a positive image. The person looking back in the mirror is one you will respect and love. Our lives are all about the journey, not the destination. Life itself is the opposite of entropy. I mean everything must eventually decay into lower states of energy right? Life is a phenomena in which, for a brief flickering moment, entropy is reversed and part of the universe is brought to a higher state. Sure, it is transcient but for the individual it is significant as it is the purpose of our existence. I think of people who do good in the world as people who continue to fight entropy on a larger scale.

So it is right to help and heal even when you know the outcome is ultimately futile.

I think that if each person does what they can to make their own lives better, instead of trying to make others suffer, the world would be a better place. People need to mind their own rights, not anyone else's. Unfortunately, you can't teach the brainwashed people that philosophy.
