Money (from oil), power (from oil) and religion. The middle east has been the source of conflict since the beginning of time, even before they knew about it's rich oil sources, so there must be something else were not hitting...many scientists and religious historians agree that man first appeared in that part of the world. So maybe it goes back to the whole "we were here first" problem...

There's this stuff called oil that we like to use to run our economies and military machines, and we're protecting our interests in the areas that have nice big fat reserves of oil. Nobody gave two hoots about the Middle East before oil was discovered there and it will be forgotten once the oil reserves dry up or the world moves on to alternative energy sources.
