Egg's are structurally strongest at their top and base, but weak at their sides. Try it: squeeze an egg pressing down on the top(it's hard), and then place pressure on the sides of the egg(it cracks). This is why eggs are cracked on their sides during cooking.
If you can get an egg to land head first, it's more likely to survive the impact. Strap a weight to the bottom of the box, lowering the centre of gravity so that the eggs land head first in the box (rather than on their sides).
Fill the 4x4 box with 4 eggs (rather than 1) so that the pressure placed on them during impact is spread out amongst all 4 rather than just the 1. This is shown by the formula: P=F/A
Suppose the force placed on the eggs is 5N, and the area of 1 egg is 0.1m^2. The pressure Placed on 1 egg would be: 5 / 0.1= 50Pascals. The pressure on 4 eggs however is a much smaller: 5 / 0.4 = 12.5 Pascals.
As suggested by others, some packaging will reduce the impact force. You may also want to attach a plastic bag that acts as a parachute. This will increase the air reistance, so that the speed on impact will be reduced.

The easiest way would be to make it a hard-boiled egg, but since I suspect that's not what you mean... :)
You need to have some way to absorb the energy that would be transmitted to the egg from the rapid deceleration of hitting the ground. If the rate at which the egg slows down is decreased, then it won't be subjected to as much force to break it. I would suggest something like packing the egg in a box full of cotton. The cotton would slow down the egg, and so long as the egg did not end up in contact with a side of the box, it should survive the drop.
Interestingly, this is the theory they used for air bags in cars: if you don't have such severe deceleration, you won't get hurt as badly. So the airbag serves to slow you down more gently.

Packing it well *might* work, but it's unlikely.
I remember this particular project from school :-)
The key is to suspend it. You need to create some sort of suspension system so the egg is suspended in the middle of the box, and it moves a little.
Rubber bands or something elastic is good. You basically want to try and make it so the egg is in the middle of the box and touching as little as possible.
Hope that helps!

be sure to use something that will absorb the shock. Like foam from a cushion or build a suspension to hold the egg in the center of the box and not touch the sides at all. They now make a soft expandable foam in a can you can get a the lumber yard.

Tie the egg in the middle of some panty hose and then tie each end to a corner of the box. The elasticity of the hose will absorb the energy of the fall...
