A bolt usually has a hexagonal head to be gripped by a wrench or a ratchet, and it usually has a flat, squared-off tip (except for lag bolts, which are pointed like screws.) Except for lag-bolts, they are designed to be fed through smooth-bore holes and held in place with nuts and washers. At the hardware store you can find them in thicknesses from smaller than a pencil lead to well over an inch, and lengths up to over a foot long. Specialty bolts can be even larger (or smaller.)

A screw has a small, round head with slots in it, to be driven by a flat-blade or Phillips screwdriver. (A few accept different shaped screwdrivers.) They are almost always pointed at the tip. Some of them come with little drill-bit heads on the tip for automatically drilling and tapping sheet metal. Machine screws have flat tips like bolts. Screws fit tightly into holes that grip the screw's threads. They are rarely more than a quarter of an inch in diameter and rarely more than a few inches long.

Both have threading to screw on-but a bolt has a hex or sq head and can be tightened or loosened with a spanner, whereas a screw has a slot on its flattened head and can be screwed on with a screw driver.
