it just comes as a shock to me that anyone would find this art form gross. i love to bellydance, it makes me feel beautiful and femmene. i just didnt know so many felt so strongly against it. now i wonder if i should tell my new boyfriend?

Belly dancing is not gross. This word much have come from a very jealous mouth. If done well, bellydancing looks really good. It is good for your health, too. You develop all those muscles in your torso and all your internal organs appreciate the gentle "massage" you give them with your own abdominal muscles. I've heard somewhere it's good for future childbearing. This is the miain reason it was encouraged in the cultures where it developed, not so much because it's sexy.
You are not doing anything wrong to be ashamed of by enjoying bellydancing. I think you should tell your new boyfriend eventually, when it comes to discussing hobbies. Keeping it secret from him doesn't sound smart. Most likely, he'll be fine or even happy about it. In case he's not fine with it you'd rather find out sooner not later. (You probably want a bf that accepts you and your hobbies anyway). But if you keep it secret it might lead to awkwardness: say you needed to go to your bellydancing class. He was trying to call you but couldn't reach you. Later, you can't even tell him where you went, he starts suspecting something bad is going on and so on... not a good reason to torture the guy.

Absolutely NOT! Belly Dancing is a beautiful, sensual art form, although I must admit I have a preference in regards to the female doing the dancing. As you stated, if it makes you feel beautiful and feminine, then by all means girl, GO! If your new-found boyfriend shows tendencies to be disgusted/irritated or "turned off" by what you enjoy, you need a new boyfriend. Don't let anyone's opinion rule your life, it's too short, enjoy it and by all means DANCE!

I dont know why people would think that it's gross. It is one of the oldest dance's in our history. I am greek. I had a belly dancer at my wedding..all the women there enjoyed it as well as the men. It is not too affend anyone. But there are good Belly dancers and Bad ones...and the ones who can really "Roll there Belly" now those are the "Originals"..do what ever makes you feel good!

It depends on who is doing the dancing. Think about Mimi from the Drew Carey show, for example. Would you want to see her bellydance?

Why would it be gross? People may be surprised when they see this 13 year old or something cha cha-ing, but they don't really know how fun it is. Although I only had one class, it was awesome! All bellydancing is like cha cha-ing or dancing in a bikini! (But a lot harder!)

I think it's hot. Alot of people think it's unlady like but it's 2006 and the world is changing all around us. So in my opinion it's not gross, I think it's a hot way to expess yourself :)
