Yes it is generally believed that Polar Bears do in fact cover their noses while hunting to allow them to blend in with their white surroundings. Polar bears also squint their eyes for similar reasons. If you were to eat a Polar Bear's liver you would also die. Having a diet made up entirley of fish/seal etc, their liver is full of vitamin A, at a level that if consumed by a human it would kill them. Also all Polar bears are left handed!

Apparently, yes (who knew?) See the article in the first link below (about the sad state of polar bears coping with global warming):

"Eskimos say their own hunting strategy imitates the bear's stalking of seals -- flattening itself on the ground, hiding behind blocks of ice and even using camouflage, covering its black nose with a white paw."

I figure that when ya weigh 1400 lbs or 650 lbs (for an adult male and female polar bear, respectively), it's probably going to pretty hard to sneak up on prey even if you were the same colour as the surroundings.

Apparently so. Not that it does them much good. Polar bears are one of the few species that consider man a prey animal. And we can spot them with or without a black nose.

I have seen on documentaries that they do. The reason is their noise is black and shows up against the white in winter. They do this so the seals cannot see them. They already know where the blow holes the seal use to breath are so they are just waiting for the seal to come up and use the hole. If the seal sees them it goes back down and uses a different hole
