A conscious creature is aware of its surroundings and possesses a limited understanding of itself within its surroundings. Whereas a self conscious creature is capable of undergoing self actualisation. It is capable of questioning its own existence or empathising.

I believe the difference is proportionate to cognitive functioning. The greater the cognitive function, the more likely the creature is capable of self consciousness.

For instance, a dog is a conscious creature. You throw a bone, it fetches. You become animated and excited, it wags its tail. It knows when it is hungry or thirsty or when its pups are hungry or thirsty. However, it doesn't commit suicide or probably can't multiply 74 to the power of 5.

A far simpler example: a conscious creature may hear a series of notes but a self conscious creature hears music and can be reduced to tears by its beauty.

Plants are unconscious, animals are partially conscious, humans alone are fully conscious.

The animals are not equipped with an intellect hence do not have the choice of action - to be self-conscious or not. They are free from this malady by default. Only humans have this weakness of being 'self-conscious'. Self-conscious means that your focus is more upon 'You' rather than the activity you are doing. Like stage fright, exam fever or sport pressures. It arises when Ego overpowers your personality. Ego can be neutralised by a clearer understanding, through knowledge of life and living.

Consciousness is awareness of your surroundings and the things that are happening around you. We, as human beings, are naturally conscious about the environment, people and things around us, and things that we are doing. But self-consciousness is a different thing. You can relate this to philosophy. It is knowing how we know. When you are self-conscious, you see yourself being conscious.

Self-conscious and conscious are completely different things. Conscious just means you are awake and aware of your surroundings. Self-conscious means you are aware of (and worry about) how you appear to other people.

The dictionary definition of consciousness is:

the quality or state of being aware especially of something within oneself.

Self-consciousness is:

conscious of one's own acts or states as belonging to or originating in oneself

or:

uncomfortably conscious of oneself as an object of the observation of others
______

We are self-conscious if we are uncomfortable with something about ourselves, either weight or clothing, etc. You can be self-conscious if you are embarrassed about something, feel everyone is looking at you. That would be the definition of a self-conscious creature in my opinion.

A conscious creature would be anyone who is awake and alert....someone or something that is aware of themselves and their surroundings....we are conscious when we are awake. We are unconscious when we are sleeping. Conscious=awareness. Self-conscious= aware of ourselves.

Did I clarify the definitions enough? I didn't find the definitions in the dictionary really descriptive enough so I hope I expanded it enough. If someone disagrees, please enlighten us with your views on the definitions!
