i have a 1990 mitsu eclipse 1.8l 5spd. i replace ecm and head gasket 1700miles ago. Car ran great for that period then the idle started jumping almost 900rpm at idle and was errattic after warm up took to a shop and mechanic told me that was normal for that car. about two weeks later I'm on interstate and I hear a electronic clicking type sound from area under dash center (ecm location) and it just shut down the engine.it will restart run for about a min or two and shut down again. you can repeat this and gas on it to keep it running but it will shut down after about 5mins of 3000+ rpm. now i'll run it parked as soon as it warms up starts the the same stuff over again. no oil or coolant leaks, since headgasket replacement. Somebody told me it is the air idle control and someone else mentioned thottle postion senor ,I still believe it's the ECM.

Mitsubishi had a problem with capacitors leaking in the ECM from cars made around this time. If this is the case, you will see visible damage if you disassemble the ECM.

I think the sound you hear is a relay clicking off. It could be a bad relay, but it could just as easily be the ECM incorrectly telling the relay to turn off.

The ECM is usually very reliable I'm surprised you had to replace it the first time. If it is bad I would look for shorted or pinched wires under the hood from the head gasket job. Some one may have gotten sloppy and caught some wires under a bolt ot bracket some where. Another possibility for your problems is the mass air flow sensor. This sensor is supposed to tell the computer how much air is getting to the engine and it is one of the least reliable sensors on most cars.
