The best part about this was Derek Jeter's response. I guess Ortiz has no brain up there just fat. How can you be valuable when your team is 12 games out of the playoffs?
What do you guys and gals think?

Al Bundy - Hell no, I'm not saying that. In your example, the guy would break HR record by 27, break the RBI record, and come the closest out of anyone in a LONG time in breaking the SBs record even though he'd still be 50 shy. What I'm saying is this: Ortiz doesn't have the most homers, he doesn't have the most RBIs, he has basically no SBs, and since Manny left, he's hit 1 home run. He hasn't done anything to help his team this year except hit like 5 walk-offs.

nugster - are you stupid, Jeter is a CAREER .316 hitter, and over the last 10 seasons, the lowest he has ever hit is .292 and he's gotten all the way up to .349.

Ortiz has some legitimate points. Stolen bases dont win ball games when there are two hitters capable of hitting 40 HR behind you. MVP goes to whoever gave their team the biggest edge, not who can play the field and hit and is not restricted to winning teams (A-Rod won it while on Texas).
As for Ortiz, he has given his team more wins than Jeter with clutch hitting and RBIs and gave his team more wins than A-rod did last year. I'd be pissed off too if I saw an award taken by a lesser candidate than me two years in a row. Even still I dont think Ortiz or Jeter said those things because those are two controvesial quotes that I have not seen in a legitimate source yet (the yankee section of newsday IS NOT A LEGITIMATE SOURCE, it is a bias piece of fabricated junk).
Having said that, Ortiz probably doesn't deserve it anyways (more than Jeter but still shouldn't get it). There is a more versitile player out there by the name of Jermaine Dye. He is a great fielder, a power hitter with a high average that still gets many RBIs despite hitting behind two other sluggers. His team's pitching has declined and he stepped it up and is keeping them in the race for the wild card and central division. He is the changing factor that is keeping them in this race (Thome too but he's not as good or clutch).

Get this. Everyone says pitching wins championships. Right? So why does the MVP have to come from a playoff team? One single offensive payer doesn't win the games. For example, the Cleveland Indians have played great baseball since they lost Travis Hafner (their biggest home run guy). So he obviously didn't have that much affect on the teams offensive production. I will agree that Jeter is having a great season. But, so is Ortiz. The only thing is that Ortiz is a DH and only helps his team in one way. Jeter also makes great defensive plays to help his team win.
However, I believe the candidates for MVP are:
Derek Jeter
David Ortiz
Jermaine Dye
Justin Moruneau
Manny Ramirez
Travis Hafner
And I believe the winner should be Jermaine Dye.
So as for what Papi said, I have to agree with him because he could put up a case for himself easily.

I do not know how a player who is 12 games out can win the MVP. Ask AROD, he knows. He won the MVP playing for Texas when they finished LAST in their division with numbers that will be inferior to Ortiz.
There is a massive MVP bias against Ortiz. The media says that he should not win it because he is only a DH and then they tout Santana as a possible winner when he only plays in 33 games a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, and by the way, Ortiz has hit more than 1 homerun since manny left. He has only hit 1 HR since he came back from his heart scare. Manny has effectively been out of the sox lineup since the 2nd week of August.

The problem with the Most Valuable player award is that it's just that, Most Valuable Player. MVP rewards just those players who's team is in contention for the playoffs. If it was a Player Of The Year award, Ortiz would win it hands down. They need to change it to Player Of The Year award, so the best over all player, no matter which team, in contention or not would get recognized. Either that have both awards which is actually a bit foolish. No, I don't think anyone who is 300 lbs is a whiny Lil *****. You only say this because you are a Yankee fan!!! I know you wouldn't say it to his face!!!!!

Ortiz is one of the greatest clutch hitters in the game today. That being said, I don't believe a DH should ever be awarded MVP. The DH is only half a player. He wouldn't exist in the national league. It's allot harder for a position player to not only put up great numbers but to stay healthy while they are fielding their position as well. If you're DH isn't putting up great power/production numbers than your GM is an idiot. When you have a SS (Jeter) not only putting up great hitting numbers, plus stolen bases and all the while making spectacular plays in the field, it should be clear who is more valuable.

i agree with u all off those other idiots that answered don't know a damn about baseball. What was ddavid ortiz before he came to boston? NOTHING. U put him in front of Ramirez boom he is great. It is Ramirez hitting behind him that makes him good. How are u valuable if u let ur team loose 5 straight to the Yankees. His team stinks. To be valuable u have to carry ur team even if it is not the best team. Derek Jeter does the little things that Ortiz does not like oh yeah i forgot PLAY DEFENSE!!! And Jeter plays a gold glove SS. Derek Jeter= MVP. Go Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!

A DH should never be considered for MVP. Any DH is not a complete player. Derek Jeter IS the AL MVP.......period. If he doesn't win it then there should be an investigation. Jeter is also a future Hall of Famer, Ortiz is not.

sure Kim, he's amazingly close to to the top. without Manny hitting at the back of him, pitchers can now pitch around him. He had what, 4 or 5 huge domicile run and rbi seasons all with Manny status contained in the on deck circle i've got observed too, that of late, his bat velocity has bogged down drastically. All in all he's winding down on a first rate profession yet do no longer seek for Cooperstown to call him after all is declared and completed.

first of all i dont think ortiz said that. i know he would never say something like....second it doesnt matter if your team comes in 1st or last. MVP you know Most Valuable Player means some who has worked hard the whole season and gave it 100%. Obviously you have no idea wat a MVP is. as much as like papi...I think neither should get it. Well, the yankees are jus goin to choke like they always do...Jeter is so overrated. GO SOX

David Ortiz gave this team momentum with all of those walk-offs and hes been caring this team. He also has been teaching Wily Mo Pena. Plus last time I checked Derek Jeter was leading the league in only batting average and he dosent even have 100 rbis and david has 128 which is leading the AL. David ortiz is also leading the AL in homeruns and total bases.
