For very old models, it was a practical choice. The incandescent light bulbs used generated too much heat in a short period of time and the already cold glass had a tendency to break. This was due to the coefficient of expansion of the glass.

The typical thought was something like people spent more time in the 'fridge than they did in the freezer, so a light source was not needed as much.

Newer models use a light bulb which can take the thermal difference with ease and so some freezers (including chest type freezers) do have a light in the freezer section.

Theres a light in my freezer. But i would think that frozen food remains in the same state "frozen" where as food in the fridge is in different stages of freshness. You need to be able to see what you might be eating right away , where as the freezer you just reach for another frozen hunk of meat or what ever!

because most people (kids and guys) tend to stand in front of the fridge to find something than at the freezer.
