They say its your mind getting rid of information that you dont need. I drempt once that someone died in my house and about a year later when I had moved out someone did die in that house, that is the weirdest dream I have had.

Complicated question. Short answer is: We don't really know.
We know dreaming has something to do with learning. For instance, the duck-bill platypus does not dream and it has a brain three times the size of other creatures of the same basic intelegence.
During sleep certain parts of the brain shut down, and others actually become more active. It is noted that the electrical puleses that fire on a rythum in the memory centers fire less frequently during rem sleep, and that after dreaming caloric consumption of the brain goes down dramaticly.
There are so many theories about why we dream and which parts of the brain are ultimatly responisble that they could never be discusses over yahoo answers.
Wierdest dream I've ever had? Too many to tell.

I once dreamt that I was an old, native African man. I was collecting firewood in the savannah when I heard a low growl. I ran as fast as I could, not looking behind me. I dove into a river (yah, I know) and swam underneath a rock that was sticking partially out of the water. I hid there for an indeterminate amount of time. From there I could see that it was a lion that was chasing me, but the lion could not get to me, because lions don't like water (explaination I gave myself in my dream). After a time, when I could no longer see the lion, I came from under my hiding space and heard above me a GROWL. Then I woke up.

dreams happen coz our subconscious mind is still working even though we are sleeping...
my weirdest dream.....:
my aunt went to the bathroom and the bathroom dont have a roof.
the radio is playing then the announcer said that my aunt won at a coca-cola contest..i was so happy that i went to the window of the bathroom but i saw her changing into a vampire...then she flew to the sky...she went to the prison where according to my dream is a prison where her husband is jailed...then she paid money to the police so that her husband can be released....
then after that i cant remember what happened....
at the end of my dream, my aunt is flying, she's chasing us then i woke up...
its not a nightmare coz i'm not frightened when i woke up....i just thought its weird...

One time i had a dream that i was calling my aunt to tape General Hopsital for me, and i lifted up my pillow thinking it was the phone. I talked into it thinking i was leaving her a voicemail, the whole time i was speaking outloud. Then i couldnt find the button to hang up the phone (pillow) so i ,very dramatically, put my hand over my mouth so she couldnt hear me sleeping. hahahaha
