at the time of adam water was the only drink, so it was his ale.......

I'm thinking Samuel Adams. They have a few ales, but I like the Boston Ale the best.

You're probably referring to "Sam Adams" ale, associated with a line of beers out of Boston. Try samadams.com for more info.
