OK, here goes!
I use both a Mac and a PC daily - both for work and home. I support a considerable number of people who have issues with their Windows systems on a regular basis and I know PCs pretty well.
Most people will say no contest - you want to have access to lots of shareware and freeware? Want to play games? Want to have cheaper software? Then go for Windows.
If you know Windows and PCs well, then yes, go for it. Hardware is cheaper to obtain, a new Windows laptop is far cheaper than a Mac Book, you'll have plenty of fun trialling software and installing games, shareware and so on.
But, if you want a computer that is easy to get to know and is so, so, so much more friendly with every digital camera, scanner, printer, external drive you plug in to it then the Mac wins hands down.
I speak from experience of being able to sit here, plug a pen drive in to my Windows laptop, wait for it to fiddle around with installing whatever it needs to - then making doubly sure I disconnect it 'properly' and so on.
Shove the same pen drive in the Mac, up pops a drive icon, I use it! when finished, I drag it to the bin and unplug it! Easy peasy compared to the PC.
There is plenty of shareware, freeware, fun stuff and serious business software for the Mac, which you'll discover has a huge support community behind it.
A Mac is a PC for the masses - Apple just haven't realised it yet!
But if you did ever need to run Windows software - you've got Boot Camp on the Mac - so best of both worlds!
Go on... get a Mac!

Definitely Mac because only the Mac can natively run Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. That gives you far more software that you can run and hence more options. The Mac is also cheaper than comparably equiped Dells: http://www.internet-nexus.com/2006/08/apples-price-advantage.htm

OS X is far more secure, so it's best for anyone who needs to use the internet on a regular basis, which will be most users. Some may need to run some Windows applications, so they could use Boot Camp (comes with Mac OS X) to boot into Windows or use Parallels to run Windows applications inside OS X. Linux is great for servers, and the combination of it in the server room and OS X on the desktop will guarantee that none of the over 118,000 viruses for Windows will affect your business when you start yours! Start getting familiar with the Mac now, since by the time you get out into the business world, the failure that is Vista will be history, and Mac and Linux will have made large gains over the old Windows monopoly.
PS: Pat P, you're either clueless or lying about being a Mac user. Transferring photos is easy on any platform, but especially a Mac.
cassie.ghoul, Safari is standards compliant so it doesn't need 'support' as long as the web site isn't proprietary. Many of the proprietary 'features' in Internet Explorer are the same things that make it vulnerable to hackers.

MacBook. Hands down. Mac OS X for music and all things fun. BootCamp for maintaining Windows XP compatibility. MacBooks can do it all. Gaming, productivity, photos, music, movies... all without viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, browser hijacks, crashes, DOS attacks... Trust me, you'll love the Macintosh. Don't be afraid to check it out. The Intel Core Duo is fast as crap, too. MacBook's built-in Airport Extreme (WiFi) is a breeze. Also, you'll have Bluetooth for syncing up with your Motorola Razr and such. MagSafe to protect your computer in case someone were to trip over your cord. The built in iSight camera is awesome. It's near DVD resolution. Just check it out on the Apple site linked below.
Apple's notebooks are ranked the highest by Consumer Reports. Apple's notebook sales have doubled since the release of the MacBook. It's quite popular.
The last link is a detailed explanation of why Mac OS X is less vulnerable to attacks than Windows XP.

This is not a difficult choice. You have to choose Windows as your going to need Office. I know you can get it for a Mac but Windows is better overall.
I would only get a MAC if your heavily involved in Desktop Publishing.

I would recommend Windows as a Mac owner/user I find that so many additional items are much more expensive and so many items are incompatible including sites on the web.ie., Photographs I can't include photographs on any of web pages because transferring is so difficult. Although I agree that the Mac is the best computer around it certainly has its limitations.

I would personally get one of both.. there's certain things you can do on one and and not the other and vice versa.
I know some businesses are better supported by PCs.. I notice a lot of Mac users use Safari, which is not supported by a lot of people. I would get a PC and a laptop personally.

I've never had a mac (no pun approaching to do with rain coats!) So I can only vouch for Windows. Its alright, if vulnerable to relentless hacking attempts.

I'd say mac if you want a computer that will be stable throughout your course of study.
if you get a PC you could be facing problems with bugs, unnecessary windows update programs that can kill your PC.
