Definitely do not miss the decor. The music and the "free-spirit" feeling - yes!
Also, the sense that America was still a free nation and a safe one to live in was still intact. That was wonderful.
Now that our emails and phone conversations are sifted through and or monitored it seems more like the 1984 depicted by George Orwell.

I miss the music, not so much the fashion. I look back on old photos and question my own taste. But not all of it was bad. We were well on our way to real and meaningful social responsibility, and that trend seems to have derailed somewhere along the way.
We all "lock in" to our favorite music, styles, fashions somewhere between age 15-25, averaging 20, so my guess is that you were born somewhere in the 50s.
I certainly long for the more simplistic things of that era. There was not 24 hour news shoved down your throat. There were but three, in some places four television stations. People knew their neighbors. Kids played outdoors without their parents worrying about abduction. The worst STD you could get was gonorrhea.
But the times, they are a changin'. Education seems to me to be accelerated more than when I was in school. The kids are certainly more socially sophisticated than we were. The political battles that used to be confined to the hallowed halls of Congress are instead being waged using the media as a tool. There are pros and cons to that approach, I suppose.
But to quote Max Ehrmann, "No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should". (if you are truly a child of that era, you know that is from Desiderata.) Stay tuned, I can assure you things will continue to change, and get more interesting, more scary or both.

I know what you mean. but u only look back with nostalgia cause in those days of starsky & hutch, bulky cardigans, side pocket trousers, 'Oh Lori' , leaving front door open, white dog poo etc - because you - we - were young and innocient then.
Even though times are really terrible now, in say 30 years the 8 year old kids of today might look back to this decade in the same way.
Oh, a good series im watching is 'Life on Mars' on Bravo channel at 10pm once a week. You can also download the whole series 1 from bittorrent. It downloads in less than a day if you got broadband. On that show, its really good because you see the 70's recreated on a bbc programme thats interesting as well.
Groovey!

I loved the 70's music soul and reggae was exceptional.
I loved going to all the clubs being able to see artists like the real thing, four tops amongst a few for the price of entering the clubs, not the extortionate prices that can be charged today.
clothes were inventive the wider the bottoms on your trousers the better, we use to make ours so we could go out with the widest bell bottoms, of course teamed up with those platform shoes, don't know how i managed to walk in those.
Roller skating was so much fun, when they eventually closed the rink we all protested with bill boards but unfortunately it had to make way for new developments.
Left school at 15 went straight into work industry was thriving at that time you could walk into one job and out again to another job.these jobs were always available. There was also more feminist views women wanting to be treated equally more freedom. I can look back with nostalgia.

I loved been a teenager in the 70's, your right there was a feeling of innocent about that era, the music was and still is fantastic, I thought we were really posh because we had two sets of brown glazed cups, one for everyday use and one for when we had company, I loved it and thought I was so cool to have left school at 15 and got a job earning my own money, I remember one day going to work and the house was as it was, when I got home we had a brand new 3 piece suite, black and orange Marquette and in the corner were the old black and white TV had been, a brand spanking colour telly stood in its place, we were the first in our block of houses to get one and the reason for the new suite was so all the neighbours coming in to watch something on a colour TV had something nice to sit on and to gossip about when they left, I remember lying to my mom about staying at friends overnight so I could go to Wigan Pier for a night of Northern Soul, amazing night and it was so worth the good hiding I got when she found out, just loved the 70's and have so many fantastic memories of them.

no...
That general feeling of innocence was not the '70's'...
its the period in your life YOU were in personally which makes you perceive it as innocent. For some the 70's was an era of wife-swapping, drugs, irresponsible (pre-AIDS) sex, drunkeness-and-debauchery - you know, just like nowadays not really innocent at all.
it was just that 'fashions' (clothes, hair, much of the music) were absolutely DIRE and 'design' (wallpaper, buildings, shopping-complexes etc) was generally horrendous!
I also recall 'imagining' a general feeling of innocence seemed to belong to the 50's...
Though I must admit...I find it hard to believe that today's young folks will look back in the 2030's and say...do you remember the 'noughties'...and that feeling of innocence...What a dreadful place the world would have to be then for you to imagine that NOW is an 'age of innocenece'
