I am a bit of a novice and a short while ago a pop up said Microsoft recommended I install Drivecleaner. I actioned this but the download did not start running - static box and loading counter remained at zero. Hell of a job closing it down, but now my hard drive still seems to be active.

kingbill is absolutely correct. Microsoft don't send pop-ups to anyone recommending software. It's either a marketing ploy, or you've installed malware/spyware/virus/trojan onto your system.

Both of the programs suggested by kingbill will aid you in finding and deleting the offending program.

The first link, below is for AVG Free Edition, and the second link is for Spybot Search & Destroy. The third link is for another useful program, called Ad-Aware SE Personal. All of them are free to download and use.

THIS IS A VIRUS DON'T DOWNLOAD IT!!! Instead, download AdAware SE Personal, which is free, and is available at:

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-2

I also suggest, if you don't have an antivirus software, download and register Avast Home Edition, which is also free at

I hope this was helpful, and in the future, DO NOT RESPONDE TO POP-UPS, CLOSE OUT OF THEM.

Do not respond to pop ups!! You have actually downloaded spyware or even worse, a virus.
Download AVG free and spybot. You`ll find these by searching on yahoo search and your problems will be on the way to resolvement!

Dee use a good antispyware tool - any of the following:
Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
A Squared Free
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
Spyware Terminator
http://www.spywareterminator.com/
all are free

I have nothing against Adaware, Spybot etc but their detection rates are not good

You've got a trojan horse that is sending all your data somewhere. Download some anti-spyware and clean it up. Then change all your passwords, especially if you do on-line banking and the like.
