Because they are the kind of cut throat people who would sell their Mothers to the highest bidder, simple as really!

Companies and people that have 800 numbers are paying for all the phone calls that are free to us.They pay a bulk rate which is a lot cheaper that accepting long distance collect calls and keeps the customer happy by not having to pay to call and do business.Cell phone companies don't offer that option they don't need the business.Cell minutes at a discounted rates to business with an 800 number would not be worth the loss of money to the cell companies.

When I changed from pay as you take to contract two years ago, Orange didn't charge me to phone freephone numbers, but when I renewed my contract last year they started to charge, and now they are charging me more.
Other than that Orange have been good, and it looks like my re-newed contract (from next month) is going to be even cheaper, with three phones on the account, any saving we can make must be helpful.
I think the only way we'll stop paying for freephone calls is when the watchdog interveines.

Because they can get away with it. There are many mobile phones given away for free, and the cost of this is subsidised by rip off tariffs, punitive contracts, and high charges for calls abroad. It's a market so vote with your custom.

It depends on network and the number you are calling.
Anyway... they love to take our money, because there are enough clients willing to pay for any bulls(h)it the company wants to charge. In Europe, NO network charges incoming call. 'Au contraire', there are some networks that are giving you credit (like 1 cent/minute) for your incoming calls.
