I am in a managerial position, while she is a staff. She and I flirt slightly.. and there is a tangible chemistry going. However, I am in a relationship (I don't want to send the wrong signals).. the gift is for her birthday.. and I want to give her one because she was the first person to make a real effort to talk and get to know me.

I think the gift is a nice gesture. Do you give gifts to others on your staff as well? I'm just saying, watch that chemistry at work because you are probably both giving out vibes where others can pick upon them. Okay, you didn't ask for advise on that----give her a gift certificate at a restaurant, or a candle. Scented candles are always nice and the Hallmark Shops have very nice ones. Fall is approaching so think fall scents.

A book. Women love "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" or something self help. Some women love cookbooks or a good Cadbury/Galaxy dessert recipe book. Definitely not jewellery. Something small and cute like a neat set of keyrings or something for her car. Just keep it impersonal and don't confuse her with your flirting...don't send out any signals if you don't want a reply!

Giving her a gift no matter what your reasons or intentions is a big mistake. The legal system would view it as sexual harassment. How would you prove that it wasn't that way? You could not. It is better to steer clear of anything that could be misinterpreted by others.

I agree with the gift card idea, maybe a pen set, or a new planner, something office like.
