It's totally your choice. If you like birds, then you should get one. I love them, especially the smaller breeds like finches and parakeets, but cockatiels are very sweet, too.
There are plenty of kinds of animals to choose from, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, cats, etc., and they all make great pets. :) You should go to the pet store and just walk around looking at everything. Something might have an overwhelming appeal. That's what usually happens to me. That's how I have ended up with turtles, tarantulas, all breeds of fish and pet mice.
Good luck to you!

I dont know much about chiuahas but he/she would be your first consideration in the decision making - how is your dog around other dogs? Is it very close to you and nobody else? If so then getting another dog would probably be a mistake - however if your dog is very friendly and happy around other dogs then a dog might be the way to go... if you are feeling a sense of loss because of your bird dying then maybe another bird is the go for you. I dont know your situation (living araingements, financial, time you have for your pets etc) but from what you have told us so far these would be my suggestions..

Ants.
Get an ant farm.
Ants are great engineers and builders. You can watch them make their home. You feed them rarely. You give them a drop of water now and then. And you can watch them work (and play) all day. Ants are much more fun than birds or dogs who just sit around all day and don't do anything--and can be a lot of trouble.

Get a guinea pig..I used to have one. they are so cool and just enough to be able to play with the dog if you watch them. they could be pals. Easy to take care of and fun to play with. Shop around and get one with a good nature. just need a cage some pine shavings food and water. they live usually 7 yrs depending on how well you take care of them. they love raw veggies too..they are so much fun.
