Apparently German drivers have better lane discipline and are a lot more observant and considerate of other Drivers, whereas in the UK most driver's are stuck in their little tin box in their own little world not caring about anyone else, and not driving appropriately for the conditions.

only about 40% of Germany's auto banns are speed limit free so be careful... German cars are built to be quick yet strong and they have some great laws to keep traffic moving that we should adopt here. Most accidents in the Uk are caused by a lack of experience or lack of concentration.

High speed doesn't cause most accidents, they are caused by drivers going slowly. If everybodies going at 75MPH along a duel carriageway except for one person doing 45MPH, then you technically have a situation where somebody has built a brick wall in a 30 zone. Nobody builds brick walls in the middle of the road for two reasons, firstly its not in fashion and secondly its dangerous!!
Germany stops this practise by having minimum speed limits as well, so a duel carriageway will be a required speed of 50-75MPH, except for in special circumstances. This means if your tooteling along trying to get someone to drive up your *** to get an insurance claim off them you'll get booked.

IRTAD suggests you figures are potty.....
safecarguide suggests Germans have more RTA's, more injuries,
"Germany - According to the German Federal Statistical Office in 1998, 7,792 citizens were killed in motor vehicle accidents, with 497,000 injuries reported. We estimate that 65,000 of the reported injuries were serious.
Great Britain - In Great Britain the Department of Environment, Transport, and the Regions reports that motor vehicle accidents accounted for 327,544 injuries in 1997 with 42,967 serious injuries and 3,599 fatalities. "
so perhaps unlimted speed on Autobahns isnt so smart after all....
or do you mean per capita? dont know the population of the UK & Germany offhand, but thats not a smart comparision, what you should look at is number of Vehilces or per distance travlled to get a reasonable comparison.... acutally most of the data is on the IRTAD site which by all comparisons [well a quick skim through 2000..2004 figures] (absolute numbers, accidents per vehicle, per head, per area) your contention is not supported by the facts.. seemingly its more dangerous to be on or near a road in Germany than it is in the UK. Ther Autobahn / Motorway rates are way out of skew so mebbe unlimited speed on a motorway isnt the option (or perhaps we export or our bad drivers to germany for their statistical exercises....)
The scary fact to me is that the UK rates are increasing, whilst other nations are decreasing - and thats despite the intorduction of speed cameras - suggests to me that there are other factors affecting inhury & accidents on the road, possibly the absence of Traffic Police?, general contempt for the law...... who knows

Where is my soapbox?
SPEEDING DOESNT KILL!!!!!!!
The most likely reason 4 an accident isn't speeding, its due 2 ignorant/arrogant drivers. I have driven over 1500000 mile in my 14 years of driving & every accident ive seen backs up my claim. Also i have had 39 points during this period & have only had 1 accident (which was due 2 my arrogants & luckly no1 was hurt!).
So dont watch ur speed, watch urself & the road!!!!!

i don't see the point of speed limits on a motorway, especially cameras, people speed then suddenly slam on their brakes when they hit the cameras, i think thats more dangerous than anything.
i agree with speed limits through villages especially around schools, although i think some speed humps on roads in place of cameras will be better.
its easier for the police to sit in their car and pull you over for doing 5-10 mph over the speed limit than it is for them to walk the beat.
also the roads in the uk are not really meant for doing high speeds so i think thats why there are so many accidents

well Germany is a larger place than us so maybe the cars are more spaced out and not crammed together like over here. Also cos the roads are so packed over here journey times are getting longer and longer so instead of leaving earlier people just drive faster. and more people dont respect other road users much.

It's simply because they're roads are planned out better where as ours are thrown down with out thought! Thus we have all the congestion and the Germans have one of the best transportation systems in the world. After the war and all the bombing they totally reconstructed there entire network where as in Britain our roads date back to the Roman occupation.

Most accidents in the UK are caused by people not keeping their distance, NOT speed. therefore the police should be after tailgaters rather than speeders. We've all had someone drive up our a s s haven't we?
