they must be on stage, too! where else could they go? their act is being observed by the actors who thought they were the only actors performing but they looked round and saw what they thought was the audience, also performing, maybe all in the same Cecil B de Mille type play with cast of millions including the audience and no-one is allowed to say they don't want to be in it.
It's so complicated!
