i agree they are over rated but i think they are because of what Kurt Cobain did to himself but in his defence he was sick of being so over rated

First off, I would not consider the smashing pumpkins or the melvins as grunge bands. And why are you even mentioning the smashing pumpkins, I think they are a bit too Poppy to be considered grunge. People only think that Nirvana is over rated due to Kurt's death. However, Nirvana actually was extremely popular and explosive at the time. During a time of pop and bad 80's hair metal, Nirvana was the first grunge band to hit mainstream popularity, and opened the possibility for other grunge bands to hit the air waves. So that is why they are classified as one of the greatest grunge bands ever. Also, Nirvana was unique and their music was extremely emotional and beautiful.

The band that defined the sound itself..............The Pixies
However, back to the question, it is the cult of the dead, a short lived band, their main songwriter dies at the height of their success, Hollywood, couldn't have written it better.

yeah they are ...n i guess they r given more hype because of the mystery n chemistry behind Curt's death...and also because of his famous quotes like its better to get burnt than to fade away" n "to be a person ur not,is a waste of person ur"..........but i think pearl jam n Alice in chains are way better than Nirvana.....if u see the popularity of these bands on the long run..and also nirvana is made famous by all those new kids on the block who have just started of listening to so called rock(or whatever they say) but don't know a jack **** bout metal...
