It's to fund the BBC. Before commercial television, the BBC was the only game in town. If you had a TV, you had to watch the BBC, and those programs had to be paid for somehow. It's a form of indirect taxation.

another way to get your money......... kinda like when i moved to Texas they said there would be a 100.00 charge before i could get my new license plate for my car..... they called it a new resident fee..... just another way to get that money... but yea i heard you guys did and that's crazy cuz the air waves are free.... but I'm sure there are crazier things out there to pay for.... start a movement to get rid of it... good luck.. :)

i dont know. it sucks though, doesnt it. I hope that the guy/girl that replaces tony blair next year is easy on our pockets.
