I would normally say to set the limit at 500 cc's if you have no significant motorcycle expereince. Due to the way the bikes are tuned, there's often a very sharp cutoff between 500s and 600s, with the 600s having about double the power, not to mention more aggressive brakes and suspension. The result is a bike that experienced riders can push hard but is too unforgiving for it to be a good choice for a newbie rider.

There's three choices currently on the market for 500 cc sportbikes, all of them OK for beginning riders: The Buell Blast, Kawasaki Ninja 500, and Suzuki GS500. These all have very different ergonomics and personalities, so I would recommend checking them all out, sitting on them, and seeing which ones you like. The Ninja 250 is good if you want something lighter that gets more gas mileage and is even easier to ride.

I also recommend taking a class like the MSF Basic Riders Course. They supply the bike, so you can take this before picking out the bike. It'll give you a chance to learn how to control a motorcycle in a relatively safe environment with an experienced rider explaining how to ride.

look for a kawasaki ninja 250. its the perfect starter bike, its light and easy to throw around, its not real powerfull but it redlines at 14,000 rpm so once your comfortable you can start reving it out and speed shifting they move pretty quick. they can be bought for under $3000 new and have a high resale value. i have ridden from 250cc to 1700cc and everything in between and always enjoyed the ninja 250 its just a fun bike.

Well it depends on your skill level have you ever rode a bike, did you take any safety courses, what about your height that also plays a role on what bike to buy. your weight too. all these factors should be looked at before you buy a bike.

It depends on the price range that you're looking at. Cheap - BMX!
Expensive - BMW. Seriously though the R1 is kick-***!
