Why is this better than setting the minimum to zero or one & allow the usage to be whatever is needed up to the maximum?

Philip w...This is just my point if one sets the min to one & the max to say one & a half times the ram size, isn't that saying that the extra pagefile size is there if needed but if not needed the space can be released & then used again as & when it is needed..upto the max of 1.5 times ram (or whatever size I set the max to). Why have that space permanently devoted to a pagefile, why not have it as use as needed?

I can understand the rationale. If the size is continually changing it will take up system resources. On an old OS I used to use it was noticeable when the swapfile was resized. Following your post I decided to check my laptop. The minimum and maximum are not the same and the minimum is not zero.

On my last computer I tried turning off virtual memory. Performance was better but, for some reason, the Office agent didn't work, not because I was out of memory: RAM usage was monitored.

It allocates that amount of disk space when you start up. If you set it with a min of 0 then you could end up with no VM and things will grind to a halt.
VM size should be 1.5 times the physical memory. Any more won't be used and you will waste disk space

You should just set this on default, and you'll notice they WILL not have the same settings. If you still get messages, especially on a Picture It software, that you need 'more virtual memory', go back in and double the minimum and maximum. If this doesn't work, you'll need to upgrade your computer. Right click on 'My Computer', and see how much RAM you have. If it's 256MG, you can buy another 256MG at Circuit City or whomever has them in your area. This will give you 512MG of RAM. First though, check with Dell, Gateway or whatever your brand of computer, first to make sure you can upgrade, before you spend the $30 for upgrade. Most laptops can only double their RAM. The installation is very simple. (Instructions come with the RAM chip).

the minimum and maximum size settings are set for keeping that much reserve space on the hard disk free to use as virtual memory.
