You'll need about 7 - 8 yards of various fabrics for the front, and another 5 1/4 yards for the backing. You'll waste some fabric on the front because you can only get 3 blocks out of the width of fabric, leaving about 5 inches unused. You'll cut the fabric into 12 1/2" squares, because the 1/4" seams reduce each block by 1/2" when sewn. A full size quilt is about 7 blocks across and 8 down.
Because of the way you cut it, you're best bet is to buy 3/4 yard lengths of 10 different fabrics, and you'll get 6 squares from each. When choosing fabrics, different values (light to dark) is more important than different colors. A medium red next to a medium blue next to a medium purple all blends together. A light blue next to a medium red next to a dark purple will have more life.
I recommend you buy a good beginner quilting book for all the tricks of cutting and piecing. Eleanor Burns (Quilt in a Day) has very clear instructions - try her "Still Stripping After 25 Years" or "It's El-ementary."
