ELDORADO was a mythical city where the streets were paved with gold. Suppose to be located some where in South America.

El dorado? That is Spanish for "the Golden One." The Conquistadors coined that term when they misconstrued something Native Americans told them about Seven Cities of Gold in the Great Southwest.

Adobe shone golden in the setting sun as Indian Pueblos were approached and perhaps the Spaniards took this literally. Or perhaps the Native Americans wanted to get rid of the Conquistadors by telling them of these fabulous 'Cities of Gold.'

In any case, the greatest of the Seven Cities was El Dorado. To fuel the Spaniard's greed the story of the Cities of Gold was embellished to include the following tale. The people were so wealthy that their leader would bath every morning, then roll around in gold dust to give him a 'golden appearance.' The leader of these mytholgical people was also known as: El Dorado."

One of the other Cities of Gold was called "Cibolo." Of hand that is all I can remember now without during research.

Hope that helped.

P. S.

Some Native Americans and Mexicans have a gorgeous, natural golden/bronze tone when they tan. I have seen this and I can understand how someone who is bitten by the gold bug can believe that person rolled around in gold dust. LOL!
