We've got so fed up with idiots pacing up and down in front of our front windows at home that I've printed a sign and stick it in the window whenever I spot someone out there. It reads:
"I'm picking up your phone call on my PC Wireless router and I can hear all of your conversation"
It's quite odd, but they soon move away and they never come back again. Strange, isn't it !!!

Where I work, the CEO walks up and down the buildings when he's discussing something important on the phone. It's quite funny and I like to judge how important it is by how many laps he does.
Personally I do it without realising. I'll answer my phone in the computer room but when I finally hang up I'll be stood in the garden and have no idea how. It's quite funny.
I think it does have a lot to do with the fact we can. With a corded phone, you're limited to how far you can move. With a mobile, you can roam as far as you've got coverage.
Standing still on the phone is something I do at work when I'm using my desk phone.

The whole idea pf making the "Mobile Phone" was so that we wouldn't have to stand still while talking on a cord telephone. And you can walk anywhere and talk.

generally people can't stand still anyway, If you do stand for a long period of time blood pools in your legs and you faint. The body relies on you moving the muscles in your legs to keep the blood flowing back from your feet.
That aside, you are generally communicating with someone and a lot of comunication is non-verbal (waving arms around, approaching and retreating, opening and closing of stance in relation to how much you agree or disagree) in short: body language.
Another factor is the knowledge that you are talking into a little box in front of other people and they might think that you are talking to them, you shift your gaze and avoid them so that there is no confusion as to who you are talking to. Just think how disturbing it was the first time you saw someone apparently talking to themselves who was in actuallity on handsfree. "are they talking to me?"

Why should we? We have cell phones to be able to talk when we're out and on the move, so standing still would just...not make sense.

Its because some people get somewhat excited when talking on a cell phone. They feel it convinient to walk while talking using a cell phone.

People shift uneasily when embarassed - and what could be more embarassing than standing in a public place having a personal conversation?......(other than standing naked in a public place having a conversation)
