Compact Disk Read Only Memory.

In other words the drive that reads CD's, compact disks.

The slot on the front of your computer which you can flip out, they can run off the IDE, SCUSI, or you can even get external ones which run off a USB port.

im studying my ecdl at the moment and you dont need to worry! the black discs that youre talking about are "floppy disks" you wont need one but you will learn about them. a cd rom ( Read Only Memory) is the disk that you can study from and/or the drive (player) that you need to use it. i think you may have been told that you need an external drive that plugs into a usb PORT, thus letting you use the cd rom. but the cd drive on your computer is what will read the cd, hence the Read Only Memory bit. dont panic, they should explain all you need to learn, as you learn. i started 6 months ago just being able to turn a computer on and have since passed 4 exams and am working on spredsheets now, its almost a doddle
