They're both actors, directors and producers with their own production companies. They've both won Oscars. They've made important political films, Redford made All The President's Men and The Candidate and Clooney made Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck. Plus, they're both politically active, Clooney was at the UN this week to plead for help for the people of Darfur and Redford has campaigned for Presidential candidates.

George Clooney does indeed draw comparisons with Redford. We can talk about the early career with the "Good ol' American" roles, plus the investigative movies that he was willing to put his reputation and wallet on the line. However remember that Redford loved movies as the major way to get the point across (hence Sundance). George finds them just one way to get them across. He will turn up at political rallies, etc.
In short, the dedication to films is the main difference.

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are the two biggest actors of our generation. Brad Pitt seems to have more similarity with redford than any other actor and the roles he plays. Clooney has a long way to go to make the same impact as pitt and cruise acting wise, if your talkin work for the needey then Gerri Halliwells the beast of the celebritys for this.

Not to mention that they are both handsome...but go beyond the 'pretty boy' to be more debonair. I think you're right...there's just something about each of them. Now Redford is a huge animal activist and campaigns very heavily for them and took an interest in giving new talent a chance and created the Sundance Festival. So, we'll have to see what George does with his fame as he gets older now.

No. Redford made good movies like Butch Cassidy, and most of Clooney's stuff is garbage... Movies are supposed to be fun, not borefests with some lame agenda.
I liked him in ER, but since then... yuck.
